Many people are dependent on reference materials to successfully communicate with others. People involved in academia, students and even your lay person may require the use of various reference materials from time to time. In fact, most people at some time in their life will be reliant upon the use of various references such as a dictionary to find out the definition and spelling of a particular word. Perhaps the most famous dictionary of them all is the Webster’s dictionary, which is not only a physical, reference resource, but is also now available online. Noah Webster (the creator of the original Webster’s Dictionary) developed his first major and large scale American language dictionary covering the English language in 1828. It was two volumes and had over 70,000 words. Today Webster’s dictionary’s online version boasts not only an English dictionary but also a multilingual thesaurus with available translation, pronunciation in audio, a word of the day, various games involving words and many other resources based around the English language.

Other common reference materials include a thesaurus (a dictionary created just for synonyms), an almanac (where you can find tons interesting facts), and the encyclopedia (groupings of books that cover various topics). While you can browse through all of these materials in your local library or bookstore, you can also take a look at them online. Not too long ago, there was a lot of money made by door-to-door encyclopedia salesman. They would sell you a set of encyclopedias for a pretty hefty amount. However, with the many great reference resources available on the internet, individuals can find just about everything they need using the reference tools on the internet.
